1811 (17 Nov) FL from Sydney to Stirling "Per Ship Thomas", rated 2sh on arrival, with "2/", with 'MA/ C 13/812 transit backstamp and "MY/1812/16" cds of Edinburgh in red on front, the brief holograph letter signed "MC OConnell/Lt Col Comdg 1st Battn/73rd Regt", filing fold, fine (Maurice Charles O'Connell commanded the 73rd Regiment that arrived in 1809 with Governor Macquarie, who appointed him Lieutenant-Governor. He married former Governor Bligh's daughter. In 1814, O'Connell & his regiment sailed for Ceylon, but he returned to Sydney in 1838, as Major-General Sir Maurice O'Connell, in command of the military forces in NSW)

The letter is from Thomas Quinton Stow, a Congregational Church minister who arrived in Adelaide in 1837 and was responsible for forming several new churches there

1843 (17 Apr) FL headed "Australind" & signed "Wpearce Clifton", to Yorkshire "p Phantom to Mauritius" (endorsed within), light strike of rectangular "SHIP LETTER" and crown/Western Australia Paid" handstamp of Bunbury (only example recorded in black), date filled in by hand, on reverse boxed CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIP LETTER in red, also 6 NO 43/LIVERPOOL/SHIP, some typical age-related soiling and stains. The earlier of only two recorded covers bearing the Ship Letter handstamp (the other being from five years later & in red), carried per "Phantom" which departed from Port Leschenault (later Bunbury) on 20/4/1843 directly for Mauritius, ex Dr Cecil Walkley (the sender, William Pearce Clifton arrived in 1841 on the "Parkfield". In 1846 he was appointed magistrate & in 1847, helped survey the road from Bunbury to Williams)

1849 (6 Jan) FL sent by Charles Meredith (Member of Tasmanian Parliament who twice served as Colonial Treasurer) in Great Swan Port (Tasmania) to Thomas McQuoid in Waniassa (what is now a suburb of Canberra), endorsed "Sea Postage Paid 5d" and "Swansea 6.1.49", with tombstone Paid and Sydney arrival, fine. Mr. McQuoid was one of the first settlers in what became known as the Australian Capital Territory, ex Dr. Ed Druce who stated "This is the earliest known letter associated with the A.C.T"

The Architect operated in the California Gold Rush and then was involved in trade with China and Australia. Gold was discovered in Australia in 1851 and the contents of the letter describe the mining situation in Australia
