Carried per P & O "China" (departed Brindisi 26.11.1877; "Hindostan", left Suez 30.11.1877; "Assam", left Galle 15.12.1877, arrived Melbourne 4.1.1878) (the addressee, Alfred William Howitt, arrived at Melbourne in 1852. He became an experienced bushman & led two parties in search of the Burke & Wills Expedition. He also explored northern Gippsland & made gold discoveries on the Dargo & Crooked Rivers.
