 | Lot #1048 AUSTRIA 1877 (20 Nov) cover sent from Meran via Brindisi to Victoria, franked with 10kr Franz Josef single and pair, tied by departure cds, manuscript "wfr 50" in red at lower-left, Bologna, Brindisi and Melbourne transits, arriving in Bairnsdale. Carried per P & O "China" (departed Brindisi 26.11.1877; "Hindostan", left Suez 30.11.1877; "Assam", left Galle 15.12.1877, arrived Melbourne 4.1.1878) (the addressee, Alfred William Howitt, arrived at Melbourne in 1852. He became an experienced bushman & led two parties in search of the Burke & Wills Expedition. He also explored northern Gippsland & made gold discoveries on the Dargo & Crooked Rivers. In 1863 he was appointed Warden of the Omeo Goldfields)
