ETHIOPIA Postal Stationery
1897 1g Menelik postal card canceled Harar (20.4.97), addressed to Djibouti, with arrival pmk on back. The card was written in French by Alexander Bulatovich (A Russian Cavalry officer, member of the Russian mission of the Red Cross in Ethiopia, later a confidant of Emperor Menelik II, also a military aide during the war with Italy and the southern tribes. Bulatovich was the first European to provide a scientific description of the Kaffa province (conquered by Menelik II with Bulatovich's help). He was also the first European to reach the mouth of the Omo River. Among the places named by Bulatovich is the Nicholas II Mountain range. After Bulatovich's return to Russia, he resigned from the Army and became a monk of the Skeet of Saint Andrew Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. He also visited Ethiopia again trying to establish a Russian Orthodox Monastery there. He was tonsured as Father Antony and became known as Hieromonk Antony Bulatovich)
