His defeat in a contest for the governorship of New York led to a duel in 1804 with Alexander Hamilton, whom he mortally wounded. Early ALS "A.Burr" 2pp, 8vo. (n.p. March 23, 1791), addressed to L.Jones, Esq., reading in part "Several Gentlemen have called on me to urge the introduction of the Bills relative to Criminal Law. I have engaged to draw several of them. They will be ready at the meeting of the House tomorrow. Do not omit to draw the Bill for the object last mentioned."
