 | Lot #1177 MEXICO 1836 (Dec) FL from Mexico City to London, forwarded in Veracruz by "Manning, Marshall and Co." (oval handstamp), placed on the ship "George Washington" 4 January 1837 to New York, where it was forwarded by "C.A. and E.H. Eckscher" (manuscript February 3 date). The letter arrived in London on 2nd March, with "Liverpool Ship Letter" box and rated 3sh 2d, fine pre-stamp forwarded item. U.S. ships began handling mail in the Caribbean on a regular basis in 1848, but it was not until April 1853 that a contract was awarded by the government for the conveying of mail directly from Mexican ports.  | Lot #1179 MEXICO 1838 (3 Oct) FL from Veracruz to Philadelphia, carried per packet "Swift", New York, November 12 arrival pmk in red, fine cover used during the "Pastry War" (Guerra de los pasteles). In November 1838, a French pastry cook, Mr. Remontel, claimed that his shop in the Tacubaya district of Mexico City had been ruined by looters and demanded compensation. When payment was not forthcoming, King Louis-Philippe of France ordered a blockade of all Mexican ports from Yucatan to the Rio Grande, with most of the Mexican navy captured at Veracruz. With diplomatic intervention from Great Britain, French forces withdrew from Mexico on 9th March, 1839 | Price Realized $500.00 |

 | Lot #1181 MEXICO 1844 (July) letter forwarded four times between its origin at Mazatlan and its destination, London. Two Mexican forwarders are indicated in the manuscript "Sengstack & Schutte" at Mexico City and "Braune Busing" at Veracruz who paid local postage required before the letter was given to the British Agency, indicated by the "Franco en Veracruz." Missing the packet by one day, it was carried by the "Tay" to Tampico then by unknown means (another forwarding?) to New Orleans. Forwarded by "Schmidt & Co." to Boston and forwarded from there by "Barnard Adams & Co." (oval markings from both companies) and via Cunard steamer "Acadia", finally arriving in London on 15th September.
