Lot #270
BHUTAN
1962 33ch bistre with country name and value in yellow, two distinct shades in sheets of 50, n.h., fine-v.f. This design was rejected because the featured character (Guru Rinpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan) was opposed to harming any living creature, including mosquitoes. An article (erroneously referring to the image on Bhutan's malaria design as that of Buddha) appeared in "Look", May 8, 1962, hence the unissued Buddha misnomer (Fillion Malaria on Stamps handbook: Bhutan 1tc, pane valuation: "J" ($1,500-2,000)
