Lot #2235
United States - Postal Stationery Postal Cards
1916 1c green, Die I, gray, rough surfaced paper postal card (USPCC S38), unused without printed address, pristine fresh and v.f., with 1992 PFC. In 1916, during a war-time paper shortage, this substandard grade of card stock was used only temporarily, for a period of about two months. They were not sold individually, but were supplied to printers, which accounts for their great rarity without printed addresses (the printed address cards catalogue only $625) (USPCC cat. $4,000),

Lot #2236
United States - Postal Stationery Postal Cards
1916 1c dark green, Die II, gray, rough-surfaced paper, postal card (USPCC S39), unused without printed address, deep rich color, clearly showing the die type with distinctive coat and queue lines, tiny natural inclusion, v.f. example of this provisional gray, rough-surfaced card, with 1992 PFC. Because of war-time paper shortages, this issue was printed on substandard card stock. Due to initial poor impressions, the die was recut to improve the design, resulting in this Die II variety. Soon after the die recut was made, proper card stock was obtained, so the Die II on this substandard stock was used only for a short period of time. Most were supplied to printers for application of printed addresses. Only six unused cards are believed to exist (USPCC cat. $11,000.00) (A comparable card was last sold in the Scarsdale Collection sale in 2013 for $18,500)
