 | Lot #433 GREAT BRITAIN 1850 Prince Consort, imperforate completed essay in red brown, lettered "F-J", without gum as issued, shallow thin at top, otherwise fresh and v.f., with 2015 BPA certificate. These essays were prepared for Henry Archer (the inventor of the first postage stamp perforating machine, which he patented in 1848, to facilitate stamp separation. He eventually sold his copyright and patents to the Postmaster General) for the surface-printed issues. When Archer was cautioned against using the Queen's Head in the design of the stamp, that of Prince Albert's portrait was used instead (it has been suggested that the check letters "F" and "J" were initials of Ferdinand Joubert, who designed Britain's first surface printed postage stamp) (SG DP71(2) E
