1858 1d blue, full to large margins all around, cancelled by straight-line "Callao" surrounded by dots on folded letter (dated March 11) to Lima, with corresponding "Callao Mar 12 58" circular datestamp alongside, sender's notation "Urgente", sent on the morning train (manuscript "7 1/2” denotes 7:30 am train departure), v.f. This is the earliest recorded use of Peru's 1858 Issue. The letter is dated just one day after the March 10th issue date, with the Callao datestamp applied on the following day. The short-distance rate of One Dinero was applied to this letter from Callao to Lima. Dated on March 11 and postmarked on March 12, this cover is the earliest known use of the First Issue and very close to the March 10, 1858, first day of issue, ex “Islander” (lot 215, hammer $26,000 plus 15% buyer's premium)
