During his tenure, he led the Church through two world wars and seven political regimes: Austrian, Russian, Soviet, Polish, Soviet, General Government (Nazi), and again Soviet. Metropolitan Szeptycki was one of the most influential figures in the history of the Ukrainian Church in the twentieth century.
