1836 MANN, Horace (1796-1859), American education reformist, Congressman from Massachusetts, brother-in-law to author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Arguing that universal public education was the best way to turn the nation's unruly children into disciplined, judicious republican citizens, Mann won widespread approval from modernizers, especially in his Whig Party, for building public schools. Most states adopted one version or another of the system he established in Massachusetts. He has been credited by educational historians as the "Father of the Common School Movement." 1961 MONROE, Marilyn (born Norma Jeane Mortenson,1926-1962) an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s. A typewritten note on personal embossed stationery (6x9inches), dated July 14, 1961 to her chauffeur "Dear Rudy, Thank you for your message. I'm sorry I was delayed with the check but thanks again for taking care of things after I left. I send my love", signed "Marilyn" (addressed to Mr. Rudy Kautzky in Los Angeles). The letter sheet has been extensively folded and has been strengthened in places, the signature is rather faint (probably due to exposure to light, as it has been framed and professionally matted under glass.), ex-Superior Auctions 1992

1850 SEWARD, William Henry (1801-1872) was the 12th Governor of New York, United States Senator and the United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. A determined opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the American Civil War, he was a dominant figure in the Republican Party in its formative years, and was widely regarded as the leading contender for the party's presidential nomination in 1860 – yet his very outspokenness may have cost him the nomination. Despite his loss, he became a loyal member of Lincoln's wartime cabinet, and played a role in preventing foreign intervention early in the war. On the night of Lincoln's assassination, he survived an attempt on his life in the conspirators' effort to decapitate the Union government. As Johnson's Secretary of State, he engineered the purchase of Alaska from Russia in an act that was ridiculed at the time as "Seward's Folly." A four page document, dated June 24, 1844 - Queen Victoria writes to the U.S. President John Tyler, confirming appointment of U.S. Consul to Hobart town (Tasmania), site of the early penal colony. The document is also signed (inner leaf) by Lord Aberdeen (George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, 1784-1860, a British politician, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1852 until 1855), boldly signed by Queen Victoria at top, royal wafer seal largely intact, some ageing, also an etching of an early portrait of Vitoria
