 | Lot #210 MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS MEXICO 1836 (Dec) FL from Mexico City to London, forwarded in Veracruz by "Manning, Marshall and Co." (oval handstamp), placed on the ship "George Washington" 4 January 1837 to New York, where it was forwarded by "C.A. and E.H. Eckscher" (manuscript February 3 date). The letter arrived in London on 2nd March, with "Liverpool Ship Letter" box and rated 3sh 2d, fine pre-stamp forwarded item. U.S. ships began handling mail in the Caribbean on a regular basis in 1848, but it was not until April 1853 that a contract was awarded by the government for the conveying of mail directly from Mexican ports. Prior to this, mail was generally placed on U.S. ships by forwarding agents.
