 | Lot #141 CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA Regular Issues 1861 (22 July) small cover (slightly reduced at top) from Savannah, Ga, with oval "Paid 10", addressed to Alexander J. Stephens, Vice President in Richmond, Va, endorsed on reverse "Sarah A. Lawton, Savannah, Ga, July 22, 1861 - writes in relation of Confederate States flag." The story of this Georgia Belle ?could easily have been the inspiration for many a Civil War romance novel. Sarah was the great granddaughter of Sarah Porter Hillhouse (1763-1831), the first woman editor and printer in Georgia. Sarah spent her childhood at Fairfield, the Alexander plantation, on the edge of Washington, Ga. The home apparently still stands and was spared destruction in Sherman's March to the Sea. Her brother, Edward Porter Alexander (1835-1910), was a distinguished Confederate General of Artillery
