Lot #1193
RUSSIA Russia Used in Asia
1917 picture postcard (Tiflis) to Petrograd, with blue "Urmijsakaya Ozernaya Flotilya" (Lek Urmia Fleet) naval cachet, cancelled "Polevaya Zapazn. Pocht. Kontora" (Fieldpost Reserve Post Office), confirming military free frank usage, with corresponding photo card showing the actual vessel and its crew, endorsed on back (dated 18 Nov 16, Urmia Lake, Persia), minor creases, otherwise v.f. According to Tchilingirian: "a Russian Consular Post Office is claimed to have operated during the 1910s in this important town of Persian Azerbaijan, but no material emanating from it is known to the authors." Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran, situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on the western side of Lake Urmia. At the beginning of World War I, tens of thousands of Assyrians and Armenians from Anatolia found refuge in Urmia. The city changed hands several times between Russians and Kurds the following two years. This card is a rare example of Russian Naval presence on Lake Urmia during WWI
