Lot #1078
JAPAN Flight Covers
1931 (28 Sep) cover headed "The Japan Automobile Co. Ltd" and addressed to Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria, franked with 18s blue, flown by Pangborn and Herndon, with 2c Red Cross adhesive added in Wenatchee, Wa (5 Oct), cover tear at right, otherwise fine, rare cover (different than the standard philatelic items prepared by the pilots; this was actually delivered to the recipients and surfaced many years later. Pangborn and Herndon had flown more than 41 hours and covered more than 5,500 miles. Despite being the first to cross the Pacific, a flight longer than Lindbergh’s Atlantic crossing, the aviators won no fame or fortune beyond the prize. It wouldn’t be until after World War II that an airplane would repeat the nonstop flight)
