1870 (Feb) FL from Menton to Marseille, franked with Italian pair of 40c rose carmine, tied by "13" numerals, with corresponding "Menton Italie" cds alongside, Genova transit and Marseilles arrival pmk on back, boxed "Affranchissement Insuffisant" and charged "10" (Decimes), fine and scarce usage of Italian adhesives in Mentone (acquired in 1346 by Charles Grimaldi, Lord of Monaco, Menton was ruled by the Princes of Monaco until the French Revolution. Annexed during the Revolution, Menton remained part of France through the First Empire. In 1848, Menton seceded from Monaco and proclaimed itself a "free city" during the revolutions related to the Italian Risorgimento. Two years, the city was placed under the protection of the Kingdom of Sardinia)
