 | Lot #513 BRITISH COMMONWEALTH BRITISH GUIANA 1936 Dod Osborne’s great adventure (which gripped the world in 1936) describes the Grimsby trawler "Girl Pat," a 75 foot diesel-powered North Sea fishing boat, which after a long voyage put in at Dakar in Senegal, West Africa on May 23, making for Florida. Apart from one sighting by a transatlantic liner, they were not seen for nearly a month until they finally made landfall on the notorious penal colony at Devil’s Island just off the coast of French Guiana in South America. They were finally arrested in Georgetown, capital of neighboring British Guiana. By then they had become worldwide celebrities and their first thought was to head for Hollywood and sell the film rights. Dod was brought back to London and sentenced to 18 months in prison with hard labor for theft of the vessel. In British Guyana, the ship was sold and in preparation for the return journey to England, stamps were designed by a member of the new crew, and were printed by the "Daily Chronicle."
