 | Lot #1043 JAPAN 1888 (25 Aug) cover from the "U.S.S. Palos, Asiatic Squadron," franked with 5sen, with Kobe departure cds alongside, sent via Yokohama to USA, San Francisco transit and Rochester arrival pmks, scarce usage (sent by U.S. Naval Officer aboard the "Palos" (actually named for Palos de la Frontera in Spain, the place where Christopher Columbus started the first voyage to America). Built in 1865, Palos was the first American warship to transit the Suez Canal and operated on the China and Japan coasts, visiting the open treaty ports and making occasional voyages up the Yangtze and Canton Rivers until June 1892
