1872-1895 "Imperial Japanese Postage Stamps Development History" - complete official presentation book (100 pages plus 4 cover pages) No. 2 printed in 1896 by Government Printing Office. Included are all issues as officially provided with 58 stamps ("Etched" issues, 27 including imperf. official reprints of 1sen and 2sen Dragons, Old Koban 17, UPU/new Koban 12, also two commemoratives and ten telegraph stamps), as well as 29 stationery items including all recorded official reprints (6); 1872 wrapper cut out; 1873-74 postcards 1-4, 1873 2sen envelope. There are also the official reprints of 1874 urgent message labels for army and prefectural usage. Only 500 (not for sale) copies were prepared for high Japanese and foreign officials, distributed to Imperial House, elder statesmen and cabinet members. The stamps and postal stationery are all stuck down to the corresponding places in the album, all exceptionally fresh, with occasional oxidation and few minor stains. 1888 (25 Aug) cover from the "U.S.S. Palos, Asiatic Squadron," franked with 5sen, with Kobe departure cds alongside, sent via Yokohama to USA, San Francisco transit and Rochester arrival pmks, scarce usage (sent by U.S. Naval Officer aboard the "Palos" (actually named for Palos de la Frontera in Spain, the place where Christopher Columbus started the first voyage to America). Built in 1865, Palos was the first American warship to transit the Suez Canal and operated on the China and Japan coasts, visiting the open treaty ports and making occasional voyages up the Yangtze and Canton Rivers until June 1892
