Lot #59
UNITED STATES POSSESSIONS HAWAII
1851 13c blue Missionary, inscribed "H.I. & U.S. Postage", used on small piece, cancelled by black 7 bar grid and tied by small part strike of San Francisco accounting mark "8" in red (debit to Honolulu 8c: 6c postage plus 2c Captain's fee), free of faults and repairs, with margins on three sides (just clear at top and incomplete at lower left), some trivial toning on reverse caused by aging and two gray surface marks (one at center left and the other next to the "I" of "H.I.") which was caused by a small ink blot which is also on the piece. The pelure paper has a very thin, tissue-like texture and is prone to tears and other damage. As a result, it is difficult to find this stamp without major repairs or flaws. There are 34 known copies used off cover, with only four used on piece. This copy is free of repairs and ranks as one of the finest used examples. No. 4-II-PCE-188 in the Siegel Census (which mentions a "nick at bottom" which is simply an incomplete margin), with 1987 Holcombe cert. A fine and attract
