Marcy, Secretary of War (under President James Polk), Washington D.C., handstamped "10," with arrival docketing, fine. The sender, first Sgt. of 6th Infantry, is asking for reinstatement in the Army. He stood up for a private who was given 77 lashes while tied to a post. A fascinating letter, concerning politics and harsh treatment. The sergeant lists character references incl. Gen. Taylor, Col.
