FRANCE Flight Covers
1927-28 world tour of French aviators Dieudonne Costes and Joseph Le Brix: 35,000+ miles over five continents, and Atlantic Ocean, in a single-engine Breguet XIX Nungesser-Coli airplane. While flying across the US, aviators encountered bad weather and were forced to make an unplanned emergency landing at a farm near Sharon PA (Mar 2, 1928; newspaper clip attached). The plane was not damaged and after extricating it from the mud, they departed for San Francisco (via Detroit, Chicago and Rock Springs) on March 4th. After arriving in San Francisco on March 8, they spent some time contemplating a Trans-Pacific flight, but eventually decided against it, and in the end of March left for Tokyo by ship. A cover headed "The Thomas Music House," franked with 25c and signed by both aviators, with green cachet reading "Carried by Costes and Le Brix from Sharon, Pa. to San Francisco, Cal. On their round the world trip," an additional 2c stamp on back, with Sharon PA 8AM Mar.4 cancel to document the departure date. The
