Lot #676
BRITISH COMMONWEALTH KENYA, UGANDA & TANGANYIKA
1954 30c Owen Falls Dam, vignette (dam) inverted, watermark inverted as well, an exceptionally attractive used example of this spectacular error showing the dam and inscription inverted but properly placed in the design, light cancellation which does not obscure the error, well centered, strong colors, trivial marginal creases of no importance (as found on each of the other existing examples), still very fine. This error was first discovered in 1983 (nearly thirty years after its issuance) by a collector in the United States who found it in a stock book among his duplicates. A second example was found in 1992 in a glassine containing common stamps (auctioned in 1993 by Christie's, described also as with slight creasing). The third example, which is offered here was also discovered in a mixture of common stamps in 1996. It is now thought that only one position in the sheet of 100 contained G 171a)
