MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS PERU
1875 (28 Feb) cover from Callao to Enfield, Ct., franked with single 10 centavo red (Lama), tied by "C38" obliterator of Callao, with British Post Office transit pmk on back, sent unpaid to Panama, where it was stamped "24" (Parmenter rarity G), indicating the amount due United Kingdom in cents for the double rate cover. Upon entry at the United States, the cover was stamped "N.York Steamship" on back and marked "Due 47." This represents double the single rate of 22 cents and a 3 cent adjustment for depreciated currency. The 22 cent rate was made up of the 12 cents due UK plus the fixed steamship rate of 10 cents. The postage needed to be collected from the recipient, since Peru was not yet a member of UPU, fine cover
