| Lot #257 MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS CHILE 1879 (5 July) small cover via Panama to England, franked with horizontal pair of 6d gray (pl.16), wing margin at right, tied by a barred numeral "C30," with Valparaiso departure cds alongside, blue crayon "25" (centavos) due rating for local postage in crayon, along with "Panama Transit" datestamp (26 Jan) on front. The cover was clearly misrouted into the U.S. mailbags as it ended up in New York, with arrival (7 Aug) pmk on back. Initially a New York "T" tax marking was applied but crossed out and a "7 1/2" (pence) due rating written in manuscript, finally arriving in Plymouth on 18 August, were it was backstamped. A fine and interesting cover
