MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS URUGUAY
1861-63 group of 10 letters, actually a single correspondence, sent unpaid from Montevideo to Saddleworth, England, carried mostly by "Mersey," also "Imperatriz," with Manchester transit and London arrival pmks. Each cover has oval Montevideo departure datestamp; no Uruguayan postage was paid due to treaty with the British. The established packet rate to England was one shilling. The addresses were woolen cloth manufacturers and the letters relate to sales in Uruguay, some cover wear and minor faults, mostly fine and unusual correspondence

1876 (15 Nov) FL to New York, franked with single and strip of 3x5c blue, tied by Montevideo departure cds, paying double rate internal postage via the British Post to London (carried on the "Tagus," arriving on 13th Nov), charged "110" in crayon (French centimes) indicating the amount due the British Post for the transit in their system. The letter arrived in New York (Nov.24), with "Due 35" handstamped on front, indicating the amount due from the recipient, filing fold through one of the stamps, otherwise fine
