MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS HAITI
1858 (8 Apr) FL from St Marc to Port au Prince, with single "St Marc" over two arcs cds on back, little toning, otherwise fine, with arrival ("R le 10") docketing, no other markings. St Marc is located on the sea, approximately 100 km from Port au Prince. The St Marc postal agency was in operation for only eight years, 1854-1861

1861-77 seven stampless letters, partly written up and tracing the routes, two each from Port au Prince to Bordeaux and Le Havre, plus one from Jacmel to Marseille, another to Bordeaux, British and French Post markings including accountancy markings "G.B. 2f87c," "G B 1F 60c," due to the British Post, others owed to the French, incl. "17 1-10" (rate of 1 franc 10 centimes per 30 grams), fine-v.f.

MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS HAITI
1863 (30 Nov) FL from Port Au Prince to Mazatlan, probably sent inside another cover, carried by the packet "Thames" via Jacmel to St. Thomas. From there, it was forwarded by "Hurtzig and Co" (oval handstamp on back, with docketing in manuscript) who placed it in the British mail paying "4" (pence in red crayon) for inter-Caribbean mail to Colon, via "Solent" (arriving December 17th). From there it was sent by rail to Panama, and was forwarded by C.A. Anderson to the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. Agency in Acapulco, which once again forwarded it, this time to its final destination, using the seldom seen Agency's forwarding mark in red. A rare item from Haiti to Mazatlan, Mexico, via St. Thomas, Panama and Acapulco

1872 (23 June) FL paying 1fr with 40c and pair of 30c Laure, cancelled by Lozenge with Anchor, with "Le Cap Haitian" departure datestamp alongside, addressed to Nantes. The letter was carried on the Ligne-Annexe D, with "Haiti Paq. Fr. D. No.1" on back. Ligne D ran between Colon/Aspinwall and St. Thomas (hence the cover could have travelled on one of the three steamers "Caravelle,"Guyane," or "Desirade.") From St. Thomas, the letter was sent on the Ligne B steamer ("Nouve.Monde") which departed St. Thomas on 28th June and arrive St.Nazaire on 16th July, with markings on back confirming these dates, fine

1877 (3 Sep) FL from Jacmel to New York, franked with 4d sage green (pl.15), cancelled with "C59" in oval, red departure cds alongside, "Jamaica Transit" handstamp on front, Kingston cds on back, carried on the Royal Mail steamer "Tasmanian" to Jamaica and by the British Atlas line steamer "Atlas" from there to USA, with New York "Paid All" duplex receiving mark on back. While Haiti did not join the UPU until 1881, this letter was received at New York without further charge since it was routed via Jamaica (which was a member of the Postal Union since 1st April, 1877)
