1869 (12 June) cover to France, franked with 5 centavo red paying the single internal rate, with "Copiapo" departure cds alongside, with British Post "Panama Transit" (29 June) datestamp (this also served as an accountancy mark for the Anglo-French treaty, indicating amount due for carriage to Colon). The PSNC carried the cover from Valparaiso to Panama and from Colon, it was transferred to a French packet "Floride" for the final voyage to St.Nazaire, with "Ligne A Paq Fr. No.3" and other transit, forwarding and arrival pmks, rated "12 (decimes) for the amount due

MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS CHILE
1874 (4 Mar) cover to Hamburg, franked with 6d (pl.12), 2d (pl.14) and 1sh (pl.8), tied by "C30" duplex and Valparaiso Paid departure cds, repeated alongside, with red London Paid on front and arrival pmks on back. This cover was carried on the "Cuzco" from Valparaiso to Callao, then the "Chile" to Panama; from there on the "Tasmanian" from Colon, arriving at Plymouth (11 April). The 1sh 8d rate was made up of 1sh 6d to England, plus 3d to German, less 1d for non-delivery in the United Kingdom. A fine three color combination cover from Chile to Germany

1879 (5 July) small cover via Panama to England, franked with horizontal pair of 6d gray (pl.16), wing margin at right, tied by a barred numeral "C30," with Valparaiso departure cds alongside, blue crayon "25" (centavos) due rating for local postage in crayon, along with "Panama Transit" datestamp (26 Jan) on front. The cover was clearly misrouted into the U.S. mailbags as it ended up in New York, with arrival (7 Aug) pmk on back. Initially a New York "T" tax marking was applied but crossed out and a "7 1/2" (pence) due rating written in manuscript, finally arriving in Plymouth on 18 August, were it was backstamped. A fine and interesting cover

1886 (Jan) cover from a British seaman, "H.M.S. Conquest," at "Coquimbo, Chile" to his family in London, franked with single 1d lilac. The stamp paid the sailors' concession rate and was cancelled on arrival in London, countersigned by the commanding officer of the ship, with arrival pmks, backflap missing, filing fold away from the stamp. British stamps were used to pay soldiers' and sailors' concession rate long after the UPU was in effect and the British Postal Agencies in South America had been shut down
