Lot #2106
UNITED STATES Air Post
1930 $1.30 Zeppelin, cancelled April 19 on flown FDC from Lakehurst to Friedrichshafen on the return flight of LZ-127, with scarce "scratched" flight confirmation cachet (50% premium per Michel). The “scratched cachet” covers resulted from an early decision by an eager postal employee in the New York Post Office to service covers intended for the flight from Lakehurst in advance. Such covers had received the "Type I" flight confirmation cachet, showing the full Zeppelin route. Type I cachet was used until May 6 (the last day before the departure of the ship carrying the American mail to be flown from Friedrichshafen). Shortly thereafter, the decision was made to modify the confirmation cachet for mail departing from Lakehurst. The new Type II cachet showed only the US to Germany portion of the trip. To comply, postal clerks were forced to manually scratch off part of the cachet design on covers processed in advance. Such "scratched cachet" covers are uncommon and are found almost exclusively on 65c
