1925 large part of registered cover (slightly trimmed at right) from Altanbulag to Ulan Bator, franked on back with 10c and 50c, tied by a square bilingual pmk, with arrival cds alongside (Altanbulag began as a trading outpost across the Kyakhta River from the Russian town of Kyakhta during Qing Empire rule of Mongolia. On 13 March 1921, a Soviet-backed People’s Provisional Government of Mongolia was established there. This government went on to oust the government of baron Roman Ungern von Sternberg and later formed the Mongolian People's Republic in 1924)

It was connected by camel caravan routes with Urga (now Ulan Bator) in the east, Khovd in the west, Barkol and other points in Xinjiang in the southwest, and Hohhot in the southeast. During the Qing rule of Outer Mongolia, Uliastai was the office of Governor general of Outer Mongolia)
