Lot #1907
RUSSIA
1858 30k carmine & green, thin paper, excellent color and well centered example, with intact perforations on all sides, tied by numeral "6" in dots arranged in oval, on outer folded letter to Taganrog, with boxed "Odessa September 30" (1858?) departure datestamp on back and internal docketing in manuscript. The lettersheet has been re-folded at top, with the usual horizontal filing fold away from the stamp, which has been lifted for inspection and properly replaced. A fine cover, ex-Mertens and Agathon Faberge collections (offered at auction on Nov 21, 1939, lot 207 described as "a fine and fresh copy used on cover at Odessa and tied with "6" in oval of dots), with 1999 Paul Buchsbayew certificate. Mr. Zbigniew Mikulski recorded only 10 (!) covers franked with Russia Number four. Of those, five are multiple frankings (three were contained in the Mikulski collection sold through Cherrystone in 2006) and one single franking exists used in the Kingdom of Poland.
