Lot #153
GERMAN EAST AFRICA Nyasaland-Rhodesia Field Force Issue
1916 (18 Sep) registered cover (captured "Deutsch Ost-Afrika" stationery) franked with four different "N.F." overprinted stamps, tied by F.P.O. 1 cds and sent by General Northey in Neu Langenburg to a lady with the Red Cross in Nyasaland, with Zomba (25 Sep) transit and Blantyre (26.9) arrival pmks, backflap missing, apparently the earliest known use of the 1sh value and the double circle FPO 1 canceller. The Nyasaland-Rhodesia Field Force (2600 men in all) moved across the border into Southwestern area of German East Africa in late May 1916. Appalling terrain and insecure supply lines often thwarted the Force's effectiveness. Nevertheless, its commander, Major-General Sir Edward Northey, took command of a colonial force in Nyasaland in the East African Campaign, later becoming Governor of Kenya), is now considered the ablest of the Allied generals operating in GEA
