 | Lot #2239 MEXICO Postage Dues 1877 (23 July) cover (opened for display) from San Juan Bautista, franked with 25c blue, endorsed "Por paquete Ingles." The 10c Porte De Mar adhesive was added on back, with the assumption that it would be carried by a British ship. The letter was sent instead a French steamer, with London transit and Paris arrival pmks, charged "12" (decimes) due, with "T 1-10" accountancy handstamp, fine combination cover. With the end of the Consular Agencies in Mexico, the post office had to deal directly with shipping lines. Each company negotiated different rates for the various routes they served. The Porte de Mar adhesives were used because the public wanted proof of payment of these fees. Since the French Porte de Mar fees were much higher than the British, their service was seldom used
