 | Lot #174 GERMAN EAST AFRICA Wartime Mail from Germany to Occupied G.E.A. 1914 (10 Nov) cover (with letter) from Altona to a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve, with Deutsch Ost-Afrika Lignie based in Zanzibar, sent via Red Cross Agency for Prisoners of War in Geneva, forwarded via London (in 1916) to Zanzibar, with "Post Free P.C. Prisoners of War" hs. The addressee was in fact not in Zanzibar, having crossed over to German East Africa, serving with a Naval unit of the Schutztruppe against the Portuguese on the Rovuma River front. By November 1917, Lt. Sprockhoff did finally become a prisoner of war of the British, but it was three years after the letter was mail and most likely he never saw it.
