Lot #87
GERMAN EAST AFRICA The Portuguese Connection
1914 (24.9) 4h stationery card from Dar-es-Salaam to Germany, via Portuguese East Africa, with Quelima, Nyassa transit, fine early example of wartime mail. British naval blockade disrupted postal service and beginning in October, mail shipments were transferred across the border monthly to postal officials in Portuguese East Africa, the only adjacent colony not at war with Germany. From there, mail was carried on Portuguese steamers to Lisbon, then transported via neutral channels to Germany. British pressure on Portugal eventually halted this arrangement in September 1915
