GERMAN EAST AFRICA The Last Pre-War Mail from Northern G.E.A.
1914 (29.7) "I Schultze Dr.Jur. Mzimba bez. Muanza D.O.A." corner card cover registered from the lake port of Musoma to London, franked on both sides with 2x15h and 3x2 1/2h, tied by the rare "Musoma Deutch-Ostafrika" cds (Friedemann Stempel 51), on back covered by a red wax seal, with Kisumu (Aug 4) and Mombasa (Aug 7) transits, reaching London on 18 September, with censor label and transferred to the "Officially sealed Returned Letter Section" (two labels) for the duration of the war. A fabulous cover, full of character and one of the most important items in the collection (purchased in 2006 at auction for $10,350 including buyer's premium) Most mail to Europe was routed through Dar-as-Salaam, but settlers in the northern reaches of the Protectorate, found it easier to send their mail by Lake Victoria steamer to Kisumu (British East Africa), which connected by railroad to the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa. The last boat carrying mail from northern German East Africa docked at Kisumu on August 9th, 1914 - the day Britain declared war on Germany.
