GERMAN EAST AFRICA The Konigsberg Blockade Post
1915 (15.3) 7 1/2h stationery card from Kikale (Rufiji Delta) to Frau Behrendt in Germany, mailed from "Salale", violet Zensur Passiert handstamp, transited via Portuguese East Africa, with Lourenco Marques (4.5) datestamp, arrival (14.7) docketing at left, v.f. Otto Behrnedt was paymaster of the German South Seas survey ship "SMS Planet" headed for leave at the outbreak of war aboard the liner "Zieten". He was transferred from the Zieten to the Konigsberg on August 6th, 1914 in the Gulf of Aden. The SMS Konigsberg was the lead ship of her class of light cruisers of the Imperial German Navy, most notable for her activities in and around German East Africa during World War I. After threatening British shipping, she was blockaded for months and sunk in July 1915 in the delta of the Rufiji River. Very little mail originating from the blockaded delta has survived

Adolph Bachmann was the obermaschinist and served on land after the Konigsberg's destruction. He was captured by the British in 1916
