 | Lot #2 GERMAN EAST AFRICA Private Companies - Schulke & Mayr 1892 Schulke & Mayr Lake Post, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c and $1 set of five, perf. 11 1/2, n.h., fine-v.f. The Hamburg firm of Schulke & Mayr established a carrier system to deliver its products, especially the new disinfectant "Lysol," to the hinterland. In 1891, the firm contracted with the Governor for its carriers to transport mail from Dar-es-Salaam to outposts on Lakes Nyassa and Victoria and points-in-between. The service began in 1892, but was unsatisfactory and discontinued that year. A set of stamps was prepared, but the contract was abrogated and remaining stocks of stamps destroyed.
