Lot #53
GERMAN EAST AFRICA Cash Franking Handstamps
1915 (24.9) boxed framed handstamps "Fr. It. Einn. Nachw. In" (Postage paid on account of receipt in" (town name), collection on pages with "Morogoro" (two wrappers), "Tanga" (receipt, also a Kriegsnachrichten card No.541), "Daressalam" (cash slip to Prof. Zimmermann in Amani), fine group of five items, showing various dates and types of handstamps. By May 1915, the supply of stamps in the colony was depleted. Parcels and printed matter from the larger post offices were handstamped to indicate that postage was paid in cash. The counter clerk accepting the money initialed the left corner of the handstamp, the dispatching clerk at right. The program was so successful that it was extended to the other classes of mail at the end of 1915, discontinued in June 1916 after a shipment of stamps from Berlin arrived by a blockade-runner
