Robinson), well centered, lightly hinged and fresh example of this classic Airmail rarity, which was issued for the first Trans-Atlantic Flight, of the 76 unused copies, this certainly ranks among the finest, v.f., with 1999 BPA cert.  | Lot #1071 BRITISH COMMONWEALTH NEWFOUNDLAND Air Post 1919 3c red brown overprinted First Trans-Atlantic Air Post April 1919, the so-called Hawker Issue, exceptionally well centered, tied by May 2 machine cancel on cover from St.John's, addressed to the proprietor of England's "Daily Mail" newspaper, with original contents (letter on "The Cochrane" stationery, from the proprietor W.V. Drayton - "thought you would like to have a memento of the first Transatlantic Aerial Mail"), used on the second attempt by Hawker & Grieve on May 18, which came to a watery end, thus the cover not backstamped, minor mends at top, otherwise unusually nice (many of the surviving covers are stained), with 1988 Diena certificate (stating that out of the 80 letters carried, only a few were carried on the second attempt)
