Lot #2093
COLOMBIA
1859 5c violet used in combination with 1p rose (1861 issue), both tied by oval Bogota pmk on 1863 cover to Madrid, with "24R" handstamped in red alongside, with London transit and Madrid arrival (18 March, 1863) postmarks. The rate is explained in the Alex Rendon, 1992 certificate "the only sensible explanation for the $1.05 rate, based on the arrival marking "24R" (3 ounces = 99.9 grams), is that the letter was rated in Bogota at 10c for the initial 10 grams and 5c for each additional 10 grams, for a total of 55c, plus 50c "Sobre Porte" fee". The cover was carelessly opened at top, with extensive repairs, including re-attached upper left corner of the 5c stamp, still it is "the only known combination usage of the 1859 and 1861 stamps, the only known 1861 1p on cover, and the only known use of an 1861 stamp to a foreign destination"
