 | Lot #735 ISRAEL - HOLYLAND 1903 registered money letter from Gorodsk (now Ukraine), with 10r donation to Rabbi Samuel Salant in Jerusalem, Odessa transit and ROPIT Jerusalem arrival pmks on back, fine. Rabbi Salant (1816-1909) was the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem. He arrived in Palestine in 1841 and during his time as the Chief Rabbi, the Jewish population of Jerusalem grew from 500 to 30,000. A scarce money letter to the Jewish Community (most of donations went to the Greek Orthodox monasteries)
