Lot #889
HAITI
1800-79 selection of 34 FLs from Haiti to USA, written up exhibition style on pages, with detailed study of rates and ship markings, departures from Port Au Prince, Cap Haitien, Gonaives, Aux Cayes, Jacmel, many with "Steamship 5", "7", "10" and "20" due markings (the latter from the Legation of the United States in Port Au Prince), oval forwarding agent's cachets, "ship" in black or red, "New York Ship Letter" and others, struck in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, some with fascinating contents (ex: 1853 letter from Port Au Prince merchant on behalf of Faustin Solouque "Emperor of Haiti" (a former slave later elected President on 1 March 1847, he proclaimed himself Emperor Faustin I in Aug. 1849). Although Steamship mail from Haiti could presumably arrive at such U.S. Gulf and East Coast ports as New Orleans, Key West, Savannah, Baltimore, Philadelphia or Boston, practically all such mail arrived first in New York, because the USPO contacts were primarily with shipping lines headquartered there.
