 | Lot #940 BRITISH COMMONWEALTH BARBADOS 1790 (June 9) FL from Barbados to "Demerary" (Demara, British Guiana), endorsed "p.favour of Ca Sisk", interesting contents with talk of impending war in Europe. Because of exorbitant charges levied on mail at the time, letters were often handed to ship captains for delivery to the recipients. The first Post Office in the area was set up by the Dutch in 1783, but its services were erratic. The British captured the territory in 1781, but lost it to the French who were in control at the date of this communication and until 1796. A fine early letter to British Guiana
