 | Lot #810 MEXICO U.S. SHIPS - 1869-77 covers 1869 Outer FL from Hamburg, April 12 to Tepic, via England, triple-rate 72 3/4 Groshen (North German Confederation) pre-paying postage to Manzanillo, the port of entry. Conveyed by a British steamer to London (6sh 6p charged to Germany), then per "Shannon" from Southampton to Colon (May 8th). Overland to Panama, then by Pacific Mail Steamship Co. "Golden City" to Manzanillo. The "6" reales paid by Colima Forwarder "Oetling and Co." was not accepted and 75 centavos was paid with 25c and 50c adhesives, which were placed over the "Franco en Manzanillo" handstamp. The cover finally arrived at Tepic on 28th June. An interesting and well traveled cover, illustrated in Mexican Maritime Mail (page 250)

The U.S. debited England only "5" (circled) cents instead of the usual 12 cents because it arrived via a subsidized ship, fine and interesting example of partial prepayment of rates in stamps to Europe, with Holcombe cert.
