Lot #838
MEXICO U.S. SHIPS - 1876-77 Porte de Mar
1876 Cover (opened for display) from Mexico City, 20 May to Philadelphia, franked with 25c Hidalgo, also with 10 centavos Porte De Mar on back, which was unnecessary because there were no "Porte De Mar" charged to the U.S. The letter was charged 5 cents due however, for a non-contract ship, advertised, "Unclaimed" and retired to the Dead Letter Office, with triangular July 31 handstamp, cover faults and reinforcements, still fine and unusual item

Lot #839
MEXICO U.S. SHIPS - 1876-77 Porte de Mar
1876 10 centavos stationery entire envelope (opened for display), from Triunfo, Baja California to Nantes, France, endorsed "Paquet Frances", but sent instead via a U.S. Packet, with handstamped "T" in circle and 35 centimes debit by the United States, bearing "Etats-Unis v. Angl. Amb. Cal F" mobile exchange office cds, indicating transport on a British steamer. On the reverse side there is 10c Porte De Mar (tied by oval "Agencia del correo en Triunfo"), which was actually superfluous as the letter was carried on a subsidized line to New York and as 'closed mail' on the British ship. Charged 1.05fr Postage due, returned unclaimed, with triangular Dead Letter Office datestamp on back, fine and remarkable cover
