 | Lot #526 MEXICO SPANISH SHIPS - 1856-1877 1857 FL from Merida to Vera Cruz, franked with 4r red and tied by boxed 18 July departure datestamp (without year date), carried by a Spanish steamer "Union", some paper erosion, fine and rare letter. The successor to the "Empresa de Correo Maritimo", after a hiatus of several years, was the Cuban firm of "Ramon de Herrera, Bolet y Cia", whose packets called at Vera Cruz starting in 1856. However, the overall volume of Mexican mail carried by them was far less that that carried by the British, French or American ships, and examples are seldom encountered. This line continued to serve Mexico-Cuba route until 1866, but its Caribbean-Spain route was taken over by the Antonio Lopez y Cia line in January, 1862
