Lot #1861
RUSSIA Russian Offices in China
1904-08 10k dark blue, vertically laid paper, block of nine, cancelled by four strikes of double circle "Hankow, Postes Russe 3.8 (?).09" and tied on piece, some creasing at lower right affecting two stamps, few short perfs at bottom left, toned corner perf. at upper left, otherwise v.f. In the collection of Michel Liphschutz there was a piece (also cancelled in Hankow) comprising seven stamps (two singles, pair and a strip of three) and until now believed to be the largest known "multiple" of this stamp. Mr. Liphschutz himself considered that piece (knocked down at 30,000 Sfr plus premium in 1993) to be the most important item in his fabulous China collection. The block of nine offered here is therefore by far, the premier rarity of Russian Offices in China
