Lot #1506
ETHIOPIA
1868 Napier Expedition mourning cover sent from Capt. Elliott to his wife in Bangalore, India, franked with 4a blue green (officer's rate), tied by "F.F." (Field Forces) diamond grid, sent via Bombay, with red F.F.P.O. Abyssinia, Bombay transit and Bangalore arrival on reverse, part of cover torn away below address, with some sensible reinforcements. The Expedition to Magdala of 1867-78 was a memorable event in British military history, and in the history of Ethiopia. The campaign was a triumph for Sir Robert Napier and it sealed the fate of the Ethiopian Emperor Tewodros (Theodore II) who committed suicide, rather than to fall in the hands of his enemies. The effects of the Napier expedition still resonate in Ethiopia to this day, with an active campaign for the restitution of looted manuscripts and other treasures (by British troops)
