1914-17 Mute Cancellations, collection of 2,000 stamps, mostly on pieces, plus 140 covers or cards, arranged on pages in 10 albums, generally described according to type and origin, with many rare usages and destinations. During World WarI, mute cancellations on postage stamps were intended to conceal (from enemy spies) the origins of outgoing mail and for mail surveillence by military censors. Mute cancels have always been considered to be rarities of Russian philately
